It’s just on the become that it starts to fall apart, although slap-right up finale rescues it about ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero great complications in life down their incredibly unattractive label.” [ 8 ]

Richard Brody throughout the The new Yorker listed “So it terse and you can tight motion picture noir is considering the new romantic and you can professional issues of your own title reputation, new unlawful genius (played because of the Penis Powell) behind an elegant unlawful casino. This new film’s journalist and director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess games, getting mortal limits, between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) worked in the gambling establishment and you may old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, the newest cast’s suavely regulated gestures out-of love and you may hazard, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can smartly assertive pictures (as well as their political conscience) get this pugnacious but really outlined spectacle an invisible antique of one’s style.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, because an authorities inspector, also within the get . While the area employs a common development, the brand new characterizations was new in addition to performances adequate in order to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you can topical, avoiding the emotional, phoney contact. Strange camera basics arrive occasionally so you can escalate notice and you can temporarily stop the attention. Solid teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing due to the fact manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, completely new publisher and affiliate producer, along with helps with making this a soft production.” [ eleven ]

Evelyn Keyes takes on the great little lady exactly who brings forth the fresh new best in him and Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen exactly who will get him towards jams. Thomas Gomez was oily due to the fact villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does yet another ready journey just like the a tired cops inspector which finally closes the situation. A great deal of consuming and smoking is completed by the all of the alarmed.” [ twelve ]
